Ford Electric Explorer Heat Pump

The Electric Explorer can be equipped with an optional heat pump providing energy-efficient heating of the vehicle cabin, resulting in less current being needed from the battery.

How does it work?

Compared to a petrol-driven car, electric vehicles do not produce enough waste heat to adequately heat the vehicle interior meaning electrical heating is required with the energy coming from the battery. Having a heat pump in an electric car can be big bonus when driving around in cold temperatures. The heat pump system compresses refrigerant under high pressure, the heat produced is used to heat up flowing cold air. This uses less energy from the battery for the high-voltage heater, beneficially delivering greater range over electric vehicles without heat pump.

What are the benefits?

Below 10°C ambient temperature and depending on weather conditions & drive pattern, heat pump system has:
• an up to 1kW power consumption benefit
• a significant faster cabin heat-up with comparable power consumption compared to heating with HV-PTC
