What is Dynamic Charging?

Dynamic Charging connects your car directly with the energy provider and calculates the best charge schedule for you. Your energy provider helps optimise your charging to save your money, but you always have ultimate control over when you charge.

Eligibility and Availability

What vehicles can use Dynamic Charging?

Currently, Mustang Mach-E® and the all-electric Ford Explorer® are capable of Dynamic Charging. We’re continually expanding our program, so check back later if your vehicle is not currently eligible.

Can I use Dynamic Charging with my Ford PHEV?

We currently do not offer Dynamic Charging for Ford PHEVs. Please check back later for our upcoming models. You may be able to smart charge your PHEV using a connected wallbox instead of Dynamic Charging, so please check with your energy provider for options.

What is required to participate?

You need to be a residential electricity customer of an energy provider that is supported by Dynamic Charging, have an active FordPass™ account with your authorised Ford EV added , and connect your EV via your energy provider app to activate Dynamic Charging. Please also ensure you activate data sharing in your vehicle settings and that your vehicle has sufficient connectivity at your home charging location.

What energy providers can I use with Dynamic Charging?

We currently support Octopus Energy in the United Kingdom and Tibber in Germany, Netherlands and Norway. Additional energy providers will be added in the future.

Activate and Deactivate Dynamic Charging

How do I activate Dynamic Charging?

Dynamic Charging is activated by connecting your Ford EV from your energy provider app. Please check with your energy provider how to start the process to connect your Ford EV. To activate Dynamic Charging, you must have an active FordPass™ account with your authorised Ford EV added . Please also ensure you activate data sharing in your vehicle settings and that your vehicle has sufficient connectivity at your home charging location.

The setup process may differ depending on your energy provider and country of residence. Please reach out to your energy provider for other specific questions.

How do I deactivate Dynamic Charging?

You can deactivate Dynamic Charging by disconnecting your vehicle in your energy provider’s app or revoking consent on sharing your vehicle data with your energy provider via the FordPass™ privacy settings. Additionally, please note that Dynamic Charging will be deactivated if you reset your vehicle connectivity setting.

Who do I contact if the setup process does not work?

Please get in touch with your energy provider.

Charging, schedules and configurations

Where can I charge my vehicle with Dynamic Charging?

You don’t need to change your charging habits and can continue to charge your vehicle anywhere. However, your vehicle’s charging will only be optimised when charging at your home location, which is set by your energy provider during the enrolment process. Your energy provider will only have access to relevant vehicle data to optimise your charging schedules at your home location.

Why do I need a home charging location and how is it set?

We need to know your home charging location because Dynamic Charging only applies to home charging. Vehicle charging data is only shared with your energy provider when your car is at home. The home charging location is set by your energy provider when connecting the vehicle. If your vehicle is not charging as intended at your home charging location, please reconnect your vehicle via your energy provider’s app or reach out to your energy provider.

What is smart charging and how will my energy provider optimise my charging?

Smart charging means that your vehicle charging is optimised for your benefit. There are different things that you can do with smart charging, but usually your energy provider will use smart charging to reduce your costs based on a time variable electricity tariff. However, some energy providers may additionally offer other smart charging benefits, for example charging with a PV system or load management for your home electricity installation. For more information, please check with your energy provider what smart charging functionalities it offers with Dynamic Charging.

Why does my vehicle start and stop charging when using Dynamic Charging?

The Dynamic Charging schedule optimises charging to meet your charging configuration while taking advantage of renewable and low-cost energy and is implemented on your EV automatically. This schedule may include times that your vehicle should pause charging and then restart, depending on the optimised schedule. The schedule is managed by your energy provider. For detailed information on how your schedule is created, please check with your energy provider.

How can I change my charge schedule or deactivate Dynamic Charging temporarily?

It is not possible to manually change the charge schedule created by your energy provider. However, if you want to switch to manual charging or set a charge schedule via your vehicle charging settings, you can always deactivate smart charging from your energy provider app. Once smart charging is deactivated in your energy provider app, the energy provider will no longer attempt to control charging of your vehicle. Please note that deactivating smart charging in the app of your energy provider is crucial, as the energy provider may otherwise override your charge settings while charging.

How can I set my charging preference when using Dynamic Charging?

You can configure your charging preferences in your energy provider’s app. Charging preferences include a target state of charge and a time when charging should be completed. There may also be additional settings. Please be aware, that charging preferences set in the vehicle or via the FordPass™ app are not considered for the charge scheduling – they have to be set in your energy provider’s app.

Will this impact the life of my vehicle’s battery?

Your Ford electric vehicle can be charged as often as needed. Scheduled charging will not have an adverse impact on high voltage battery life.
